Did you bounce out of bed this morning?
Or did you hide your head under the covers, vainly trying to avoid your micro-managing boss, your infuriating co-workers, your mundane job, your dreary windowless office or that crazy stalker lady in Accounts?
Take heart. Your dream job is out there somewhere. It just needs a way to find you. Cue JobCrystal, the new and surprisingly different career management portal that brings the best jobs and career information right to your inbox.
1. Sign up to get HeadHunted
We’re all rather busy these days - they don’t call it the rat RACE for nothing. While we all recognise that every 2-3 years we should look for career opportunities, job hunting is time consuming, stressful and not much fun. If you’re already juggling a family and career then weekends should be saved for things a lot more enjoyable than reading the Job Ads. That’s why JobCrystal decided to offer a headhunting service to busy employees that allowed them to be confidentially matched to job offers from top employers. Everybody we’ve spoken to agrees it’s a better way to do job hunting.
2. Supply us with a few personal details
No, nothing as personal as THAT, gosh. (We’re blushing now. And you should be too.) We’re just going to ask you to fill in your name, suburb, current job, that sort of thing. And by the way, everything you share with us stays with us, until you give us permission to pass your contact details on to a potential employer.
3. Complete the rest of your profile info as you have time
We’ll even supply you with a handy Completeness Indicator(TM) so that you know how much more you have to do before you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done. The information that makes up your full profile includes things like your career history, personality type, references, your dream job, and so on.
4. Don’t upload a CV
No, you didn’t misread that – we said “don’t”. Because who likes compiling their CV, right? The great thing about the way that JobCrystal is set up is that you don’t have to compile, scrape together, fabricate or otherwise rustle up a CV at all. Your profile consists of a number of question-and-answer fields, and as you complete these (in your own time), we build up an online profile for you, which totally eliminates the need for a CV of any kind.
5. Introduce your friends to JobCrystal
This one’s important. Every time one of the friends that you’ve introduced gets successfully placed by us, we pay you R1,000. Yes, that’s right. For doing nothing, except having smart friends. So if you don’t have smart friends, best you find some right away, and invite them to join JobCrystal.
6. Join groups and meet up with people like you
“Bob’s in IT.” That’s what Bob’s mom says whenever one of her friends asks what Bob does for a living. Bob’s mom (and most of Bob’s friends) (and even Bob’s wife) have absolutely no idea what an “Enterprise Integration Architect” is. Jo-Ann has the same problem with “Certified Public Accountant”, and Sid’s given up telling people that he’s a “Chief Environmental Scientist” because he doesn’t like getting blank looks. Bob, Jo-Ann and Sid would love to talk shop with people who actually understand the concepts they deal with every day. It’s always been pretty hard to find those people, but not with JobCrystal. We will hook you up with other people in similar careers and give you opportunities to meet, share ideas and network with them, both online and offline. Wouldn’t it be nice to go to a gathering and introduce yourself by your full job title, knowing that for once people’s eyes will light up, rather than glaze over?
7. Make use of our career resources and career pathing information
We’ll give you the tools to manage your career – salary surveys to find out what you should be earning, suggestions of careers you could consider based on your personality profile and skills, the inside track on who’s hiring right now, and even what skills you should consider acquiring if you want to move up a rung or two on the career ladder. Useful stuff. The kind of stuff that makes smart people even smarter. And you’re a smart people, presumably, or you would have stopped reading long ago.
8. Await the arrival of your next job
Yup. You just sit back while our gears and cogs and levers go to work behind the scenes. Employers approach us with positions that need filling, and our system picks out the best candidates by matching their profile information with the job offer. If you’re one of those candidates, you’ll get an SMS telling you that you’ve been shortlisted. You can log in and check out the details of the job, and if you decide that it might be worth a closer look, you let us know. Only then do we release your contact details to the employer, so that they can set up an interview. This means that you won’t get harassed by recruiters offering you heaps of unsuitable jobs, and you’re always in control of who has access to your contact details.
9. Send us your story
Because the truth is that we’re big softies at heart, and we like to hear feel-good stories: stories about poor kids becoming international singing sensations, harrowing tales of kittens being rescued from tall trees by brave firemen, and best of all, true-life stories about hard-working people who’ve discovered that their dream jobs really do exist, and it is possible to bounce out of bed every day. You can either let us know through the section called “Have Your Say” on your Dashboard or email us at my-story@jobcrystal.co.za.
Why Join?
Here are ten signs that you’re ready to sign up with JobCrystal:
1. You like money
JobCrystal caters for all the money-likers out there in a few ways. Become a member and:
- Friends you’ve introduced to JobCrystal who get placed through us, earn you R1,000
- Free members who get headhunted through JobCrystal, get an in-bonus worth R1,000

- We focus on positions from employers paying R150,000/year or more
2. You’re really very [busy/stressed out/lazy]
JobCrystal has got to be one of the easiest ways to find a new job. (We’d like to say it’s THE easiest way, but someone might be busy inventing some crazy machine that taps into your brainwaves and finds you work telepathically, and then we’d be lying.) Here’s why JobCrystal is the busy person’s friend:
- We do pretty much all of the work for you.
- You don’t have to upload a CV.
- You can fill in your profile in manageable bite-sized chunks, as you have time.
- We actively monitor the employment market on an ongoing basis.
- We bring job offers to you. Right into your inbox.
- We send you a text message each time you’re shortlisted for a job, so you don’t even have to remember to log in and check!
3. You don’t want your boss to know that you’re looking around
Job-hunting is tricky when you’re already employed. For one thing, you have to keep coming up with new and convincing excuses for taking time off to go to interviews. Now we can’t really help you with that, but what we can do is promise you complete discretion and confidentiality when you use our site. We will not share your information with anyone at all until you give us permission to do so. It’s that simple.
4. You have a career, not a job
JobCrystal is for people who see their work as something meaningful, rather than just a way to pass the time and earn a few bucks. We’ll help you to manage your career in a whole lot of ways.
Here are just a few:
- We will provide career pathing information, to help you see where your current career could lead, and to establish what your next move should be in order to get to where you really want to go.
- We’ll be making use of personality profiling to help you to find your passion and figure out what would make you want to bounce out of bed each morning.
- As our membership base grows, we’ll be able to tell you what kind of jobs people with similar skills and interests to you have enjoyed and found fulfilling.
- We’ll suggest skills that you should consider acquiring and developing in order to move in your chosen direction.
- We’ll provide you with an ongoing service. JobCrystal is not about finding a single job, on one occasion. It’s about managing your career, staying in the market, and always being available for your next job to find you.
5. You have rock-star needs.
Different things are important to different people…
- Some people need a kind boss who won’t get grumpy at them for no apparent reason.
- Others need flexible working hours so that they can get to their children’s sporting activities, or sleep in from time to time.
- You might like a window in your office, or a really expensive coffee machine in the company kitchen.
- Perhaps you’re really hoping to work somewhere that has pool tables, regular company outings, beer o’clock every Friday afternoon, a creche on the premises, or in-house gym facilities.
We know that being happy at your job isn’t only about how much money you take home at the end of the month. So when it comes to matching you with suitable job offers, we take a whole host of your personal tastes and preferences into consideration.
6. You don’t know enough people who share your profession.
Sadly, “networking” is an over-used buzzword that’s come to be associated with slick salespeople, self-promotion, and… breakfast. But that’s not what we mean at all. When we say that we offer networking opportunities, we mean that we will hook you up with people in your field, doing the same or similar work, so that you can talk shop, share your challenges, and learn from one another.
7. You don’t like wasting your time.
We’re a job-seeker marketing agency, not a recruitment agency. This means that we won’t hound you to go for interviews, and we won’t bombard you with hundreds of phone-calls and emails. Each time you’re shortlisted for a position, we’ll notify you by text message and send you an email containing enough information about the employer and the position to allow you to make an informed choice. If you choose not to pursue the opportunity, that will be the end of it. No begging, no coercion, no “just go along to the interview and see what it’s all about because you never know – you might like it!”
8. Your knowledge is your greatest asset.
JobCrystal is for
- high-potential job-seekers
- people who have niche skills
- those who have trouble explaining their occupation in a single sentence
- problem-solvers
- knowledge workers
- professionals
- individuals who seek out challenges
- those who enjoy learning and constant improvement
9. You like to know the latest gossip.
Not about Brad and Angelina and their seventy adopted children, no; but about the things that matter – what you should be earning on your current job grade, what skills you need to develop in order to move up the ladder, which careers are recession-proof, who’s currently hiring, that sort of thing. As our membership base grows, we’ll be accumulating and publishing all sorts of interesting data and resources to give you a better feel for what’s happening out there in the job market.
10. You prefer to be in control.
JobCrystal is all about putting the power back into the hands of job-seekers. Picture yourself as a king (or queen, if you’re of the girl persuasion). You’re sitting on your throne, with a big jewel-covered staff in your hand, while your minions bring you offers of trade from faraway lands. Some you summon closer so that you can get a better look at what’s being offered (a three-storey castle by the sea sounds like a reasonable swap for 100 of your sheep, for instance), whilst others you shoo away immediately with that big staff of yours (because really, who in their right mind trades their daughter for a couple of bags of “magical sand”?). That’s pretty much what JobCrystal is like, although we provide a dashboard rather than an actual throne.
- We bring you the job offers, and you choose whether or not you’d like a closer look.
- We host networking events, and you choose whether or not to go along to them.
- We suggest skills you might need, and you decide whether or not to acquire them.
- We give you the resources, and you map out your own career path.
