Carry Mykita and Gotti Switzerland
Andrea moved down from Manchester in early 1999 to be with her now husband, John Clamp. Having made plans to purchase and build her own practice in Manchester, Andrea’s thoughts turned to Cambridge. Having worked in a number of practices in the area, Andrea decided on and agreed to buy the practice, formerly called Jackson Cox, in April 2002 from Mr. Bryan Storey. The practice itself was established in 1908 by Mr. Hyman who interestingly, during the first world war, designed and manufactured a type of range finder in the basement for the British Military.
Andrea’s main aim is to create a practice which is clinically excellent and still manages to offer a very friendly and individual service to its customers. With this in mind, the practice was completely refitted during the first 2 months of 2002. During this period, space was very limited but with the kind support of both the customers and staff, the re-fit was a success. Throughout the whole process, the progress of the practice was followed by the UK’s optometric profession through a series of articles entitled ‘The Making of a Modern Practice’ written for the leading optical journal ‘Optician’.
This is not the first time the Clamp name has been associated with an Optometric practice in Cambridge. Geoffrey Haldyn Clamp, Andrea’s father in law, established a practice in Bridge Street in the late sixties. He was joined by David Thomas as a partner in 1973 and then moved to the site in Green Street. David succeeded to this business in 1978, when it became ‘D.H. Thomas Opticians’. Some customers still remember being tested and fitted with contact lenses by Geoff in the past. Andrea is very proud to continue the name.
Andrea’s interests also lie with bringing new and exciting brands of frames to Cambridge. It is her firm belief that eyewear is not only functional, but can be fun and look great!
Please do not hesitate to come into the shop to look around. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to advise you on different frames, lenses and contact lenses.
EYEWEAR
We are committed to delivering clinical excellence, consulting with you on the health of your eyes and helping you select frames and lenses to suit you particular lifestyle.
| We will evaluate your eye health using a series of tests and evaluation procedures, which include: | |||||||||||
| Assessing your eyesight history and general health | |||||||||||
| Checking your current glasses or lenses | |||||||||||
| Using ophthalmoscopy to determine your health of your eyes | |||||||||||
| Digital retinal photography is used to capture a high quality image of your retina to enable accurate monitoring of the heath of your eyes | |||||||||||
| Performing refraction tests to determine you’re the best correction to improve your near, intermediate and distance vision. | |||||||||||
| Testing how well your eyes work together with binocular tests | |||||||||||
| If appropriate, checking your peripheral vision and intraocular pressure to screen for eye conditions such as glaucoma. | |||||||||||
On completion of your eye tests, you will be given your optical prescription and can discuss the health of your eyes. Regular eye tests are essential to maintain the quality of your vision and the health of your eyes.
THE EYE TESTAn eye examination is carried out by an optometrist and usually takes about 20 - 30 minutes (but may take longer if extra specific tests are required) and will normally include the following elements: Symptoms. Why are you having your eyes examined? Is it a routine check-up or have you come for a specific reason such as VDU screening. If you are experiencing problems with your eyes or vision your practitioner will need to know what symptoms you have, how long you have had them and whether any changes have happened suddenly or slowly over a period of time. History. Your optometrist will need to know about your general health including if you are taking any medication, whether you suffer from headaches, currently wear spectacles or contact lenses, or have any close relatives with a history of eye problems etc. Additional information, which will help your practitioner to make an accurate assessment, includes your occupation, whether you play sports or have any hobbies etc. EXAMINING THE EYEYour eyes will be examined both externally and internally. This will enable an assessment to be made of the general health of your eyes and identify any other underlying medical problems. The interior of your eye will be examined using an ophthalmoscope which shines a light through the pupil allowing a detailed study of the internal structures. Other tests which may be carried out, if necessary, include for example those for glaucoma or colour vision deficiency. VISIONYour vision will be measured both with and without spectacles or lenses in front of the eyes to check for any problems with your eyesight. Your optometrist will do a series of tests to measure the type and extent of any problem with your vision. You will then be asked to choose between different lenses to see which ones help the quality and clarity of your vision. EYE MOVEMENTS & CO-ORDINATIONEye movements and co-ordination are checked to make sure that both eyes are working together, and that undue stress is not being placed on their muscles. Good muscle balance is particularly important for those who use computers, drive etc. AFTER THE EYE EXAMINATIONYour practitioner will now have a detailed knowledge of the health of your eyes, the standard of your vision and any special requirements that you may have. This information will be explained to you but remember, if you do not understand anything or require more information PLEASE ASK your optometrist who will be only too pleased to help. At the end of the examination you will be advised on the appropriate interval until your next examination and be handed a prescription for spectacles or contact lenses or a statement which confirms that your eyes don’t need correction. If you need medical treatment for an eye condition you may be referred to you doctor. When you have your prescription made up, you will be given help in choosing spectacles or contact lenses. If you choose contact lenses you will be given advice on the various types of lenses available, the procedures for fitting lenses further information about caring for and cleaning your lenses. If you are not satisfied with your spectacles or contact lenses make sure that you contact your practice so that the matter can be dealt with promptly. There may be a small fee charged for this service. As part of continuing care and service your optometrist will be happy to adjust or make minor repairs to your spectacles where possible. Your spectacles can work loose with wear and accidents do happen! PROFESSIONAL BODIESClamp Optometrists are members of and are guided by the following professional bodies.
